In 2024, the Technology Hall of Distinction unveiled its long-term vision to recognize and elevate 10,000 African innovators by 2040. We introduced the THoD Framework for Impact, our strategic plan to shape future-facing recognition in emerging tech, and formally launched the Responsible Tech Leadership Consortium, an unprecedented collaboration to champion ethical and inclusive technology leadership across Africa.
At the heart of all this progress was our largest judging cycle to date, spanning six countries, three industries, and over 900 nominations reviewed by more than 70 independent evaluators.

Artificial intelligence is redefining the world, and those who shape it today will determine what it becomes tomorrow. That’s why the Technology Hall of Distinction is investing in ensuring that more young Africans, especially girls and underserved youth, are not just AI users but AI creators.
In 2024, we launched our AI for Inclusion Initiative, integrating responsible AI literacy into our judging framework and spotlighting entrepreneurs and researchers using machine learning, data science, and predictive technologies for good. Through this effort, our honorees are not only recognized for innovation but for the social impact of their AI-driven solutions.
We believe that ethical innovation begins with access and understanding. Through our partnership network, we began offering workshops and mentorship to nominees and young community innovators on tools like natural language processing, ethical data
A team of young engineers from Nairobi developed a smart surveillance model that uses AI-powered drones and motion-sensing cameras to detect poaching activity in real-time. Their solution earned them a special commendation under our Sustainable Tech Track.
Two bioinformatics graduates, Amina and Chuks, built an AI model that scans packaging and barcodes to identify substandard or fake medications. Their work is now being piloted in partnership with local pharmacists in Lagos and Abuja.
In 2024, the Technology Hall of Distinction marked its most impactful season to date, spotlighting a growing community of innovators across Africa and beyond who are building transformative solutions for business, governance, and society.
This year, 18,200 emerging and established tech professionals engaged with our programs, enough to fill the Eko Convention Centre more than ten times over. From grassroots creators to high-impact entrepreneurs, each participant reaffirmed our mission: to recognize not just excellence in technology, but meaningful impact.
We received 1,870 full nominations from 53 countries, featuring standout contributions in AI, robotics, fintech, digital health, data science, and more.

In 2024, the Technology Hall of Distinction took a significant step toward democratizing access to quality tech learning by expanding its learning materials into seven major African and global languages, including Hausa, Edo, Yoruba, and French.
Beyond language accessibility, the Hall also partnered with leading technologists, educators, and past honorees to roll out three advanced learning modules centered on digital ethics, responsible AI use, and green technology integration. These special topic units serve as supplements to the core curriculum and equip rising technologists with the tools to think beyond technical execution, into real-world consequences, equity, and sustainability.
Each module includes real-world case studies, expert interviews, and scenario-based activities designed to help learners engage with urgent global challenges through a technology lens.
From data privacy in emerging markets to the ethics of automation in public services, participants are now better equipped than ever to build solutions with integrity and insight.
In 2024, the Technology Hall of Distinction (THoD) reignited global energy around innovation and recognition, marking a significant return to in-person engagement after years of digital-first operations. From cross-border dialogues to local innovation spotlights, our network of nominees, honorees, and community partners came together to reconnect, celebrate, and collaborate.
And in a major milestone, THoD successfully hosted its Global Technology Recognition Summit in Lagos, Nigeria, in partnership with leading industry sponsors. The summit welcomed select honorees, emerging talents, and delegates from across the world. Finalist teams had the opportunity to pitch live to an audience of global innovators, policy thinkers, and venture leaders.
Through the programs and recognition initiatives of the Technology Hall of Distinction, participants don’t just learn, they evolve. Whether building prototypes, pitching innovations, or engaging with mentors, young innovators acquire a toolkit that goes far beyond technology.
From mastering coding languages to applying AI in meaningful ways, these changemakers gain a competitive edge rooted in real-world problem-solving, entrepreneurial thinking, and collaborative leadership. Their journey sharpens their communication skills, deepens their technical capacity, and builds the confidence to lead bold, community-driven solutions in a fast-moving world.
Impact isn’t just measured in technical abilities, it’s seen in the transformation that happens when individuals are surrounded by belief, opportunity, and support.
They begin to see themselves differently, not just as learners, but as leaders. They gain the courage to speak up, the resilience to keep building, and the vision to imagine a future where their innovations shape industries and uplift communities.
In 2024, over 42,000 volunteers dedicated more than 120,000 hours to advancing innovation, mentorship, and inclusion across Africa’s growing tech ecosystem.
From Lagos to Nairobi, Cape Town to Accra, our regional mentors and partners participated in exchange programs that helped unify strategies and share culturally grounded innovations. These connections sparked lasting partnerships across sectors.
We also introduced an upgraded Mentor Engagement Toolkit, a curated resource designed to guide volunteers through the complexities of nurturing talent, evaluating innovations, and supporting diverse technologists at every stage of their journey.
The Hall thrives because people show up, committed to building something bigger than themselves.
In partnership with leading innovation hubs, the Technology Hall of Distinction launched the Africa Rising Fellowship, a pan-African initiative aimed at expanding grassroots participation in STEM education and innovation. Through this program, we onboarded a vibrant network of regional innovation ambassadors who established over 100 new innovation chapters across secondary schools and universities in 12 African countries.
Recognizing that not every team has access to experienced mentors, we introduced the Virtual Expert Coaching Series, a pilot initiative that delivered live, skills-based coaching sessions to underrepresented teams. Covering topics from pitching and prototyping to AI literacy and business modeling, the program connected over 3,000 young innovators with coaches across academia, industry, and venture capital.
The results? Higher submission rates, stronger prototypes, and deeper confidence among participants, especially those in rural or first-time applicant communities.
The Technology Hall of Distinction is proud to celebrate the rise of a bold new generation of innovators who are not only shaping the future, but already leading it. As of 2025, more than 55,000 young women have emerged from our programs, networks, and initiatives with the skills, mindset, and community to lead transformative change.
These young leaders are breaking barriers across sectors. In just the past year, Hall alumnae have addressed global policymakers at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum, contributed groundbreaking research at COP 28, and even received prestigious recognitions like the International Children’s Peace Prize. Behind every recognition is a personal story of courage, resilience, and impact.
But beyond the spotlight, tens of thousands more are quietly reshaping the fabric of society, founding social enterprises, leading tech teams, transforming local education systems, and mentoring others along the way.
Our commitment to these women doesn’t end when they graduate. Through our Alumnae Leadership Circle, we provide continued opportunities to lead as mentors, regional ambassadors, speakers, and strategic advisors. Whether they serve as jurors for our innovation awards or lead policy roundtables, our alumnae remain central to the Hall’s mission: building a future where women don’t just participate in technology, they shape it.
The Technology Hall of Distinction was founded on a belief that talent is universal, but access is not. Around the world, far too many bright young minds are locked out of opportunity due to where they live, the resources available to them, or the biases built into the systems meant to help them grow.
That’s why THOD’s approach is centered on equity, delivering free, high-impact programs to communities that have been historically overlooked in science, technology, and innovation. Whether it’s rural regions without reliable connectivity, schools that lack STEM education, or families with limited income, our mission is to close the gap, not widen it.
We take a local-first approach. We support grassroots organizations, educators, and community leaders to identify students who might otherwise be excluded, and then equip them with the tools to thrive. From coding workshops and innovation challenges to mentorship labs and pitch sessions, our model is designed to meet young innovators where they are, in the languages they speak, and on terms that reflect their realities.
Last year alone, more than half of THOD’s programs were delivered in regions where formal tech education is nonexistent. A majority of our student participants came from low- or moderate-income households, and over 60% had never previously interacted with a female role model in science or technology.
To fuel this reach, we invested directly in community chapters, allocating targeted grants, training local facilitators, and supplying devices and materials for students in underfunded schools. This is more than charity, it’s a long-term commitment to building sustainable ecosystems of talent in places where opportunity is scarce.
We believe that by redistributing access, we multiply possibility. The more underserved communities we empower, the more diverse, resilient, and inventive the future of technology becomes. And that’s a win for everyone.
